Fuchsias are a favourite among gardeners, known for their eye-catching flowers, and lush green foliage.
Although they are more commonly known to thrive in temperate climates with the right care, they can grow beautifully in the eyre peninsula region. So, join Leonie and Stephan at Kallinyalla Garden Centre as they share their tips on how to great fuchsias.

Choosing Your Fuchsia
Select a bushy, compact Fuchsia with healthy leaves and a strong root system. This will ensure a robust plant that flowers beautifully.

Ideal Conditions
Fuchsias thrive in strong filtered light and fresh air, but they need protection from harsh winds. The best spot is one that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. Some established varieties can even handle full sun!
Soil and Potting
For basket varieties, use a premium potting mix that meets Australian standards. For tubs, opt for a free-draining mix to prevent root rot. If planting in the garden, ensure good drainage by amending the soil with compost.

Nutrient Needs
Fuchsias require consistent nutrients for healthy growth. Use a controlled-release fertilizer for containers and organic fertilizers every three months for garden plants. A potassium-rich supplement during flowering will boost blooms.
Watering Tips
Keep Fuchsias well-watered, especially in hot weather. Baskets may need watering twice daily. Pruning before the hottest days can help reduce water needs. Established garden plants will rely more on groundwater.
Pruning for Health
Perform a hard prune in July or August to maintain growth and remove weak stems. A light trim in early January helps manage size and encourages blooms in autumn and winter. Avoid pruning during heavy frost periods to protect tender shoots.

With the right care, your Fuchsias will flourish, bringing colour and joy to your garden. Happy gardening!
